Ukraine will receive $116 million from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) to support decentralized power generation, grid infrastructure, and energy storage. The financing is expected to unlock an additional $693.8 million in co-investment from the World Bank, the EBRD, and private companies.<\/p>\n
The scale of the challenge is considerable: according to DixiGroup, Russia has destroyed, damaged, or occupied nearly two-thirds of Ukraine’s installed generating capacity. CIF data from January 2026 puts available generation at roughly 13 GW against peak demand of 18 GW.<\/p>\n
The grant targets three areas: renewable energy development, cross-border grid integration, and energy storage. A central infrastructure element is a 400 kV interconnector between Chernivtsi and Suceava that would add 880 MW of import capacity and 445 MW of export capacity into European networks. Following talks with Romania in March, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to build two interconnectors \u2014 the first this year, the second within two years.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s private sector will also receive backing for battery energy storage systems (BESS) totalling up to 610 MW, intended to provide grid balancing, operating reserves, and curtailment relief. CIF chose battery storage because units can be brought online quickly and expanded in separate blocks \u2014 an approach that supports distributed generation connections and alignment with European electricity markets.<\/p>\n
The Climate Investment Funds were founded in 2008 at the request of leading G8 and G20 economies.<\/p>\n
