Ukraine’s commercial energy storage sector has reached 650 MW of installed capacity, according to Oleksandr Martyniuk, head of strategic planning and analytics at grid operator Ukrenergo, who shared the figure during an online presentation of a new industry guide by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA).<\/p>\n
The 650 MW total covers only standalone storage facilities operating as independent market participants \u2014 it excludes backup systems and equipment on the consumer side. Martyniuk said the grid can accommodate further additions, and Ukrenergo’s generation adequacy assessment puts the system’s long-term need at roughly 2 GW of such capacity by 2035, again counting only standalone battery installations rather than storage co-located with renewable plants.<\/p>\n
The bulk of existing capacity came online through Ukrenergo’s long-term ancillary-service auctions, which have been running since 2024. From the grid operator’s perspective, adding more storage is strategically valuable: it allows the system to integrate higher shares of renewable generation, improves flexibility, and provides a fast-response balancing tool.<\/p>\n
The scale of the build-out has positioned Ukraine competitively in Europe. UWEA chairman Andriy Konechenkov noted that the country ranked among Europe’s five leading energy storage markets in 2025.<\/p>\n
The newly published UWEA guide maps out available monetisation models alongside the regulatory gaps and risks that prospective investors should weigh before committing capital to new projects.<\/p>\n
