A Frankfurt-based startup is developing a sodium-ion home battery for people who rent apartments or own units where roof access or the installation of a personal solar plant is simply not available. Revolta’s device plugs into a standard wall socket, charging when electricity prices are low and discharging during the evening peak — all without complex installation, according to pv Europe.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the government of the German federal state of Hesse and is scheduled to run through the end of 2029. Revolta says its sodium-based chemistry avoids scarce materials such as lithium and cobalt. The company expects the chemistry to be well-suited to residential use, citing high thermal stability and resistance to overheating as relevant properties for apartments.

The system is designed to respond automatically to fluctuations in dynamic exchange tariffs. Even so, Revolta has not yet disclosed technical specifications — storage capacity, output power, retail price, and a commercial release date all remain undisclosed, placing the project at an early engineering stage.

The development coincides with a regulatory shift in Germany. Rules from the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) that took effect on 1 October allow storage systems without their own generation source to connect to the grid at reduced fees, with lower tariffs on energy returned to the system. Those changes create the regulatory prerequisites for fitting batteries in urban apartments even where no rooftop solar panels are present.
