Christian Breyer, professor of solar economics at LUT University, told PV Magazine that domestic electrification based on renewables significantly raises a country’s overall energy efficiency. He and his co-authors, whose findings appear in the journal Energy Reports, conclude that political decisions \u2014 not technology costs \u2014 are what hold back the transition in states that resist it.<\/p>\n
Russia stands as a stark counterexample. Despite substantial natural solar and wind potential, it built very little green capacity, and following its 2022 war of aggression against Ukraine all sector expansion ground to a halt. Breyer frames the obstacles as purely political, comparing the reluctance to abandon fossil dependence to an addiction: even a rational, economically advantageous path may go unexplored under irrational governance, and overcoming it demands deliberate political choices.<\/p>\n
