When heat pumps fill that seasonal trough, the fixed costs of transmission lines and substations get spread across a larger volume of electricity sold, reducing the per-unit delivery cost for every connected customer.<\/p>\n
RMI’s analysis finds that existing US grid infrastructure could absorb an additional 86 million residential heat pumps beyond the 23 million already operating \u2014 without any upgrades. Broad deployment of fully electric and hybrid systems in states where demand peaks in summer could reduce retail rates by an average of 13 percent, translating to roughly $15.6 billion in annual savings, or about $200 per customer.<\/p>\n
A historical parallel reinforces the logic: between 1980 and 2000, US electricity consumption grew more than 70 percent, yet inflation-adjusted retail rates fell 26 percent. RMI recommends redirecting incentives away from air conditioners toward universal heat pumps, and introducing seasonal tariffs that lower winter electricity prices to encourage heating electrification.
