A Japanese corporation has begun shipping its first perovskite solar glass modules to customers from pilot facilities in Moriguchi, more than two years before planned mass production is set to begin at its Nagahama plant in April 2029. The early commercial launch, which started in September 2026, aims to accelerate market entry while serial manufacturing techniques are still being refined, pv magazine reports.<\/p>\n
The pre-series modules are available as laminated glass panels measuring up to 1.8 by 1.0 metres, in either 3+3 mm or 6+6 mm thickness configurations. Both float and high-strength glass variants are offered, with custom decorative finishes that allow the panels to serve as architectural elements \u2014 replacing conventional windows or cladding building facades.<\/p>\n
When full-scale production begins at Nagahama, module dimensions will grow to 1.8 by 1.2 metres and thickness options will expand to 4+4 mm and 5+5 mm, including double-glazing units and a tempered glass variant. The manufacturing process draws on inkjet solution coating, laser processing, and glass encapsulation. Panels have passed internal tests aligned with IEC 61730 and IEC 62790 standards and satisfy Japanese building regulations.<\/p>\n
The company has not yet disclosed rated efficiency, output power, temperature coefficient, lifespan projections, or pricing. In laboratory conditions, cells measuring 802 square centimetres reached 18.1 percent efficiency, and in late 2025 the firm trialled window-integrated modules at an office building alongside construction-materials maker YKK AP.<\/p>\n
Policy is reinforcing the technology’s prospects: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has set a target of roughly 20 GW of perovskite capacity by 2040, while the Ministry of the Environment intends to exclude conventional silicon panels from new subsidy programmes starting in fiscal year 2027, redirecting support toward perovskite and other next-generation technologies.<\/p>\n
