This report captures a historic milestone: in the first half of 2025, clean generation (solar + wind) exceeded the growth rate of electricity demand &#8211; and for the first time in global energy history, renewable sources surpassed coal in electricity production.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"559\" data-end=\"581\"><strong>Solar Energy Surge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"836\">In 2025, solar generation grew at a record pace &#8211; <strong data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"652\">+306 TWh (+31%)<\/strong>, increasing its share in the global electricity mix from<strong> 6.9% to 8.8%.<\/strong> This single figure was enough to cover nearly <strong data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"805\">83% of the global demand growth<\/strong> in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"861\"><strong>Wind Remains Steady<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"1012\">Wind generation added <strong data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"904\">+97 TWh (+7.7%)<\/strong>. While growth rates are lower than solar, wind continues to be a key pillar of the clean energy transition.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1014\" data-end=\"1033\"><strong>Overall Balance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1104\">\n<li data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1072\">\n<p data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1072\"><strong data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1051\">Renewables<\/strong>: 5,072 TWh (+7.7%)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1104\">\n<p data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1104\"><strong data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1083\">Coal<\/strong>: 4,896 TWh (\u20130.6%)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1224\">This means that, for the first time in history, clean energy overtook coal in its share of the global electricity mix.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1226\" data-end=\"1282\"><strong>CO\u2082 Emissions: Stabilization After Decades of Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1417\">The electricity sector showed signs of stabilization: <strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1381\">emissions decreased by 12 MtCO\u2082 (\u20130.2%)<\/strong> compared to the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1419\" data-end=\"1440\"><strong>Regional Dynamics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1442\" data-end=\"1894\">\n<li data-start=\"1442\" data-end=\"1548\">\n<p data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1548\"><strong data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1453\">China<\/strong>: Covered the entire demand growth with clean sources and reduced emissions by <strong data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1545\">\u201346 MtCO\u2082<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1681\">\n<p data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1681\"><strong data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1560\">India<\/strong>: Experienced moderate demand growth <strong>(+1.3%)<\/strong>, offset by the expansion of renewables and steady operation of gas plants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<p data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1783\"><strong data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1691\">USA<\/strong>: Faced high electricity demand, requiring additional coal and gas generation <strong>(+33 MtCO\u2082)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1894\">\n<p data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1894\"><strong data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1792\">EU<\/strong>: Increased solar generation, but lower hydro and wind output partly compensated by gas <strong>(+13 MtCO\u2082)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"1997\">Without the growth in clean energy, <strong data-start=\"1932\" data-end=\"1996\">global emissions could have risen by approximately 230 MtCO\u2082<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2040\"><strong>Clean Energy Becomes the New Standard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2042\" data-end=\"2303\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/\"><em><strong>Ember<\/strong><\/em><\/a> analysts describe this year as a structural turning point for the global energy system.
