The International Energy Agency<\/span><\/span> has captured a major turning point in its new report Electricity 2026<\/em>: the world is entering the \u201cAge of Electricity\u201d \u2014 a period when electricity becomes the core \u201ccurrency\u201d of the economy and demand growth reaches a new scale.<\/p>\n

Covering the years 2026\u20132030<\/strong>, the IEA outlook shows that renewables, grids, and flexibility<\/strong> (energy storage, demand-side response, and new connection rules) will define countries\u2019 competitiveness and energy security in the coming decade.<\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

Electricity demand is set to grow faster than at any time in recent decades<\/h2>\n

The IEA projects that global electricity demand will grow by an average of 3.6% per year in 2026\u20132030<\/strong> \u2014 around 50% faster<\/strong> than the average growth rate of the previous decade.<\/p>\n

A key shift is that electricity consumption is starting to \u201cdecouple\u201d from historical GDP patterns: by 2030, electricity demand is expected to grow at least 2.5 times faster than total energy demand<\/strong>. This is one of the clearest markers of the \u201cAge of Electricity\u201d.<\/p>\n

      For Ukraine, the EU trajectory is a particularly important signal. According to the IEA forecast:<\/p>\n

        wind becomes the EU\u2019s largest source of electricity<\/strong> over the forecast horizon, overtaking nuclear<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        wind\u2019s share in the EU rises from 17% to 25% by 2030<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        average annual growth of wind generation in 2026\u20132030 is around 10% per year<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In parallel, the EU renewable share in power generation<\/strong> increases to 63% by 2030 (from 48% in 2025)<\/strong>, while the share of variable renewables (solar + wind)<\/strong> rises to 46% by 2030 (from 30% in 2025)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        In other words, Europe is moving toward a system where wind is no longer an \u201cadd-on\u201d \u2014 it becomes a core system-forming pillar.<\/p>\n

        Grids remain the main bottleneck of the transition<\/h2>\n

        The biggest constraint is not a lack of generation technology \u2014 it is a lack of grid capacity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        The IEA highlights several structural challenges:<\/p>\n

          over 2,500 GW<\/strong> of projects (renewables, storage, and major new loads) are stuck in grid connection queues worldwide<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          to meet projected demand, annual grid investment needs to grow by around 50% by 2030<\/strong>, from the current level of roughly USD 400 billion per year<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          grid build-out often takes 5\u201315 years<\/strong>, while renewables, data centres, and charging infrastructure can scale much faster<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          A key practical conclusion from the IEA is that beyond \u201cconcrete and steel\u201d, the system needs regulatory solutions<\/strong> that enable faster connections and better use of existing networks \u2014 including more flexible connection rules and technologies that increase grid capacity.<\/p>\n

          What this means for Ukraine: practical priorities for 2026\u20132030<\/h2>\n

          Wind is a strategic asset for integration with the EU power market<\/h3>\n

          If wind becomes the \u201celectric foundation\u201d of Europe, then Ukrainian wind power gains a clear long-term logic: sustained demand, a defined role in the balance, and continued investor interest \u2014 provided Ukraine aligns rules with the EU and removes grid constraints.<\/p>\n

          Grids and connections are the main front of state policy<\/h3>\n

          Connection queues and limited transmission capacity increasingly determine whether investment interest turns into real megawatts on the ground.<\/p>\n

          The \u201cwind + storage + grids\u201d triangle is the new energy-security standard<\/h3>\n

          As variable renewables rise toward 2030, flexibility<\/strong> becomes a basic requirement rather than an optional feature \u2014 storage, demand response, and flexible markets\/ancillary services.<\/p>\n

          For Ukraine \u2014 under wartime conditions and during recovery \u2014 this simultaneously means:<\/p>\n
