Wind power is entering a phase where the key question is no longer \u201cHow many turbines?\u201d but \u201cHow does wind electricity actually work inside the power system?\u201d<\/strong> Recent deals and market signals from Europe and Ukraine point to the same trend: the faster wind\u2019s share grows, the more the market and the grid demand flexibility <\/strong>\u2014 energy storage, imbalance management, grid upgrades, and smarter connection and balancing rules.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Europe: wind scales up\u2014and batteries become the market standard<\/h2>\n

A telling example is a long-term deal where energy storage<\/strong> is effectively used to \u201csmooth\u201d wind generation. Statkraft<\/strong>signed a seven-year PPA<\/strong> with Swedish developer OX2<\/strong> for two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in western Finland \u2014 110 MW<\/strong> and 125 MW<\/strong> (contract start from 2028<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

A key detail: these BESS projects are planned to operate alongside OX2\u2019s wind assets<\/strong> and share a grid connection point<\/strong>. This is not \u201ca standalone battery project\u201d but an infrastructure element that turns wind into a more manageable and predictable<\/strong> product for both the system and the market.<\/p>\n

Why does this matter specifically for wind?<\/h3>\n

Because scaling wind generation produces two effects that investors and grid operators can no longer ignore:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • \n

    Price volatility:<\/strong> during high-wind hours, supply rises sharply \u2192 prices fall.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Negative prices<\/strong> (in some zones\/countries): when \u201cgreen\u201d generation exceeds what the system can absorb or export due to grid and flexibility constraints.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    At this stage, BESS becomes not a \u201cnice-to-have,\u201d but a way to:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • \n

      reduce losses during low\/negative price hours,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      monetize flexibility (fast reserves, ancillary services),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      cut imbalance risks and make output profiles more predictable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Bottom line:<\/strong> the higher wind\u2019s share, the less valuable \u201cinstalled MW on paper\u201d becomes \u2014 and the more valuable controllability<\/strong> becomes.<\/p>\n

      Ukraine: wind capacity is accelerating again, but the bottleneck shifts to the system<\/h2>\n

      Ukraine\u2019s market is also showing signs of renewed momentum: public estimates indicate around 500\u2013600 MW of new wind capacity<\/strong> could be added during 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      This matters for two reasons:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \n

        Wind is regaining an investment pace<\/strong> even under extremely challenging conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      2. \n

        At the same time, the \u201csystem layer\u201d becomes decisive \u2014 everything that determines whether new wind is real usable electricity in the grid, not just installed capacity in a report:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • \n

          grid connections and real available capacity,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          dispatching and curtailment,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          balancing and reserves,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          integration of storage and demand management.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          In other words, in 2026\u20132027, the key issue for Ukraine is not only \u201chow much we build,\u201d but \u201chow it will operate in the network\u201d\u2014both in normal operation and under stress.<\/p>\n

          Storage in Ukraine: not only economics, but resilience<\/h2>\n

          If in the EU batteries are often framed as a response to market volatility and revenue optimization, Ukraine has an additional layer: resilience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          Energy storage helps to:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • \n

            support critical loads,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            stabilize the system quickly during disturbances,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            smooth variable generation,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            reduce reliance on emergency measures.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            That is why the wind + BESS<\/strong> combination in Ukraine is increasingly shifting from an \u201coptional improvement\u201d to a practical infrastructure necessity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            The new wind economics: the questions that come first now<\/h2>\n

            When discussing wind projects, the decisive factors are increasingly not only CAPEX and wind resource quality, but three groups of parameters:<\/p>\n

            A) Market and price<\/h3>\n
              \n
            • \n

              what happens to revenues during surplus hours,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            • \n

              whether there is a mechanism to reduce volatility (BESS, contracts, services).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              B) Grid and connection<\/h3>\n
                \n
              • \n

                whether there is real available network capacity,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

              • \n

                whether a hybrid configuration (wind + BESS) is feasible with a shared connection point.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                C) Bankability<\/h3>\n
                  \n
                • \n

                  whether there is a predictable cashflow (long-term contracts, clear rules),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                • \n

                  how the project manages imbalances and curtailment risks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  Conclusion<\/h2>\n

                  Wind power is entering a new cycle: scaling has become the norm<\/strong>, and the competitive advantage is increasingly controllability<\/strong>. European practice shows that the more wind you have, the more you need storage and system solutions<\/strong>so wind works not only \u201cwhen it\u2019s windy,\u201d but \u201cwhen the system needs it.\u201d For Ukraine this approach is even more critical: accelerated wind growth in the coming years logically makes BESS, grids, and balancing<\/strong> top priorities \u2014 the conditions for real scale, not just installed capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
