The green recovery project of the Nizhyn community became one of the winners of the 100 gREen AWARD-2025<\/strong>, an award that recognises the best implemented green transformation projects in Ukraine. This case was distinguished as an example of how a community can combine energy resilience, the modernisation of critical infrastructure, and a systemic approach to local development.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Nizhyn continued its course towards strengthening community energy independence through the deployment of solar generation, the use of ESCO mechanisms, and the attraction of international support. The city\u2019s official sources emphasise that solar power plants, grant programmes, and partner investments are part of a broader logic of energy resilience and green transition for the community. In this model, renewable energy is viewed not as a standalone technical project, but as an instrument of the city\u2019s long-term transformation.<\/p>\n

A major strength of the Nizhyn case is that it unfolds at several levels at once. On the one hand, the city is working with municipal policy in the field of energy efficiency and green recovery. On the other hand, it is implementing concrete practical solutions at critical infrastructure facilities, especially in healthcare. Thanks to this, Nizhyn can be seen as an example of a community where green transformation has already moved from the level of plans to the level of infrastructure solutions.<\/p>\n

One of the most illustrative examples of this approach is the development of solar generation at healthcare facilities. In 2024, a solar power plant with a capacity of 80 kW<\/strong> and battery storage was installed at the Nizhyn maternity hospital. According to Ecoclub, this solution was intended to strengthen the energy security of the facility and ensure continuity of medical services even during emergency or planned power outages. Public sources later also reported on the expansion of solar generation at the city hospital and its practical effect on the work of medical units.<\/p>\n

In 2025, the impact of these decisions became more visible across the whole community. According to Suspilne, citing the Nizhyn City Council, in the first quarter of 2025 the community saved almost UAH 7.5 million<\/strong> on energy resource consumption compared to the same period in 2019, and this saving was directly linked, among other things, to the operation of solar power plants within the community. This is an important signal that green transformation in Nizhyn already has not only an environmental or symbolic dimension, but also a tangible financial effect for the local budget.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Nizhyn integrates the energy agenda into a broader recovery framework. In 2026, the city reported on the international green transformation project \u201cPartnership for Energy Resilience and Green Transition of the Nizhyn Community.\u201d<\/strong> In this publication, the city council directly stressed that the community is implementing solar power plants through grant programmes and private investors, while also using ESCO mechanisms. This means that the community\u2019s path is not a one-off initiative, but a consistent course towards a more resilient energy future.<\/p>\n

For Ukraine, this case is important because it shows that the green recovery of a community is not only about rebuilding after destruction, but also about changing the very logic of development. Nizhyn demonstrates how investments in solar energy can simultaneously strengthen critical infrastructure, generate budget savings, reduce vulnerability to energy crises, and create the basis for a more modern model of local governance.
