The educational programme of KPI in the field of renewable energy became one of the winners of the 100 gREen AWARD-2025<\/strong>, an award that recognises the best implemented green transformation projects in Ukraine. This case was distinguished as an example of how university education can contribute to the future of the energy transition by combining fundamental engineering training, modern technological directions, and a focus on real market needs.<\/p>\n

Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has been training specialists for the energy sector for many years, and the field of renewable energy is one of the areas gaining increasing importance. Public university materials refer to the educational programme \u201cAlternative and Renewable Sources of Energy\u201d<\/strong>, which is offered at both bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s levels within the specialisation G4.03 \u201cRenewable Energy Sources and Hydropower.\u201d<\/strong> For the master\u2019s level, the official KPI page states a study duration of 1 year and 4 months<\/strong> and provides the English title of the programme as Alternative and Renewable Sources of Energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The strength of this case lies in the fact that it is not a one-time educational initiative, but a systemic programme for training engineers for a sector that directly influences Ukraine\u2019s future energy model. In the programme documents, the university emphasises that its goal is to prepare highly qualified and competitive professionals capable of designing, installing, operating, and maintaining systems based on alternative and renewable energy sources in the context of sustainable development. This is especially important because the market needs not only general knowledge about energy, but specialists who can work with concrete technical solutions.<\/p>\n

The content of the programme also deserves attention. Department materials and programme descriptions emphasise that it has a multidisciplinary structure<\/strong> covering such areas as solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, bioenergy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and hydropower<\/strong>. This breadth gives graduates an opportunity to work across different segments of the market and makes their training more adaptable to changes within the sector. At the same time, the curriculum includes specific disciplines directly connected with electromechatronic systems based on renewable energy sources, energy production technologies, and related engineering solutions.<\/p>\n

Another important feature of this case is the constant updating of the programme. The master\u2019s programme description notes that in 2025<\/strong> the programme \u201cAlternative and Renewable Sources of Energy\u201d<\/strong> was updated following monitoring and taking into account proposals from participants in the educational process, graduates, employers, and other external stakeholders, as well as comments from the expert group during accreditation. This means that the programme is developing not in isolation within the university, but in dialogue with the market and the professional community.<\/p>\n

The importance of this project for Ukraine goes far beyond one university. The renewable energy sector increasingly requires engineers who understand not only theory, but also the practical aspects of creating and maintaining next-generation energy systems. In this sense, KPI\u2019s educational programme works as an infrastructure solution for the future: it forms the human capital base for a sector that will determine the speed and quality of the country\u2019s energy transition in the coming years.<\/p>\n

Another strong aspect of this case is institutional continuity. The educational programme did not emerge \u201cfrom scratch\u201d as a short-term response to a trend, but is based on KPI\u2019s long-standing academic and scientific school in the field of energy. Public university documents state directly that the bachelor\u2019s programme was originally developed in 2018 and has since been further developed and updated in line with new challenges. It is precisely this continuity that makes it possible to combine a strong engineering foundation with the current priorities of renewable energy development.<\/p>\n

For Ukraine, this case is particularly illustrative because green transformation requires not only investment in technologies, but also investment in knowledge, skills, and human capital. The extent to which universities are able to train a new generation of specialists for the renewable energy sector will shape the country\u2019s ability to scale solar, wind, bioenergy, and hydropower not as isolated projects, but as elements of a new energy system.
