How do you turn a home battery into a full distribution-grid asset when the homeowner will not pay thousands of dollars up front to install one? Several US energy companies have launched subscription models for home storage that remove the upfront barrier.<\/p>\n
Startup Base Power offers Texas households a backup subscription for a single upfront charge in the low hundreds of dollars, occasionally dropped altogether, plus $19 to $29 a month. It also sells a separate energy-and-backup package with roughly $700-1,000 down for one or two 39.2 kWh batteries. Palmetto is rolling out a similar plan at an effective $25-$50 a month.<\/p>\n
The operator keeps ownership of the hardware and commits to service it for 10 years, using the batteries to help balance the grid in parallel. Aggregated, the units can trim net load at peak hours and ease both local and system-wide constraints.<\/p>\n
“When a provider tries to work out the cost of service, it can shape customers’ consumption to make supplying energy cheaper, and in turn cheaper for the customers themselves,” said Will Kenworthy, senior regulatory director at Vote Solar, calling the model “just amazing.” The approach is already spreading beyond Texas, helped by 2022 rate-design changes that opened the door.<\/p>\n
