Greenhouse gas emissions from the European Union’s energy sector rose 4.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026 relative to the preceding quarter, Eurostat data show, while overall economy-wide emissions edged up just 0.3 percent across the same period. The gap between the two figures reveals that record-pace renewable installations are not enough to guarantee a smooth downward carbon path.<\/p>\n
Seasonally adjusted EU emissions stood at 837 million tonnes of CO\u2082-equivalent in Q1, with GDP holding flat compared with Q4 2025. The longer view is more encouraging: measured against the first quarter of 2025, total emissions fell 1.2 percent even as GDP expanded 0.8 percent. The quarterly bounce, however, exposes a recurring vulnerability \u2014 weather swings and geopolitical pressures periodically push grid operators toward heavier fossil-fuel reliance to keep networks stable, eroding gains from newly commissioned solar and wind capacity.<\/p>\n
Within the economy, the electricity and gas supply segment drove the sharpest quarterly increase at 4.8 percent. Households trimmed their footprint by 1.3 percent, and both manufacturing and transport each cut emissions by 0.6 percent.<\/p>\n
Twenty member states recorded higher emissions quarter-on-quarter. Estonia saw the steepest climb at 9.7 percent, followed by Finland at 6.4 percent and Bulgaria at 4.6 percent \u2014 increases Eurostat ties primarily to construction and energy-sector activity. Seven countries bucked the trend, with Slovenia posting the largest reduction at 5.0 percent and Luxembourg following at 3.8 percent.<\/p>\n
The figures are incorporated into the bloc’s official inventory as the EU tracks progress toward climate neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n
