Europe installed 36 GWh of new battery storage capacity over the past year, a 48% increase that pushed the continent’s cumulative total above 100 GWh for the first time, according to a SolarPower Europe report. Utility-scale projects were the primary engine of that growth.<\/p>\n

Germany held its lead with 6.6 GWh of new capacity, despite growing only 2%. The United Kingdom climbed 64% to 5.2 GWh, while Italy added 5.0 GWh. Ukraine and Bulgaria rounded out the top five at 2.9 GWh and 2.7 GWh respectively.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s result is striking not just for its size \u2014 a roughly fivefold jump year-on-year \u2014 but for the reason behind it. Across most of Europe, home batteries are bought to trim electricity bills or store surplus solar power. In Ukraine, the calculus is different: households install them to survive grid blackouts. “Ukraine proves that batteries are not just an energy technology, but a resilience technology,” said Vladyslav Sokolovsky, head of the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The market is also spreading geographically. The five largest markets captured around 62% of annual deployments, down from nearly 80% in 2024, suggesting that storage is gaining traction well beyond the traditional leaders. SolarPower Europe projects Europe’s total installed storage fleet could reach between 437 and 735 GWh by 2030.<\/p>\n
