In the countries most exposed to climate risk, the economics of energy transition have quietly reached a turning point. According to a new Ember analysis, solar generation now costs less to start up than coal or gas for members of the Climate Vulnerable Forum \u2014 a bloc that represents more than a fifth of the global population yet consumes under 5 percent of the world’s electricity.<\/p>\n
The cost shift dismantles what had long been the primary barrier to renewable expansion in these markets. Yet official figures may be dramatically understating how far deployment has already gone. Ember’s data show that in eight out of ten CVF countries, cumulative imports of solar equipment since 2017 outpace formally recorded installed capacity by at least a factor of three \u2014 suggesting a vast amount of generation that simply does not appear in national statistics.<\/p>\n
Speed of rollout is widening the advantage further. Solar-plus-storage complexes reach completion far faster than gas-fired plants, which routinely face multi-year delays in turbine supply chains. Roughly half of CVF nations have already surpassed the United States in solar’s share of total electricity demand.<\/p>\n
Private capital is moving in the same direction. Aligned Climate Capital is raising a $500 million fund targeting a portfolio of more than 500 MW of distributed solar and battery assets across developing markets.<\/p>\n
For communities where more than one in five people consumes fewer than one megawatt-hour of electricity per year, the stakes go beyond cost curves. Ember frames solar as offering a “cheaper and more reliable path to prosperity” \u2014 one that developing economies can pursue on their own terms, without waiting for large centralized grids to reach them.<\/p>\n
