For energy-intensive manufacturers or data centre operators, locking in roughly half their electricity spend \u2014 even at a modest premium over today’s calm-market rates \u2014 removes the budget uncertainty that comes with trying to anticipate price swings. The contrast with gas underscores the appeal: IMF data shows global gas prices surged 60.2% between February and July this year, while European solar PPA rates edged up just 2.8% between the first and second quarters.<\/p>\n
Raw capacity growth, however, does not automatically translate into resilience. Spain shows what happens when supply outruns demand: curtailment volumes \u2014 generation that was produced but had to be switched off \u2014 rose from 0.1 TWh in 2021 to 4.6 TWh in 2025. Solar peaks at midday, when grid prices often fall toward zero, yet corporate demand typically spikes in the evening hours.<\/p>\n
That mismatch is reshaping buyer preferences toward profiled solar contracts, combined wind-and-solar agreements, and projects that integrate storage. Wind power costs more per MWh but generates through nights and cold-weather months, making the two technologies complementary for any buyer managing price risk across the full day and year.<\/p>\n
Even if Middle East supply tensions ease, analysts see the PPA market remaining anchored to energy security for the long term: Europe’s structural reliance on gas imports is unlikely to unwind quickly, and clean-energy contracts will stay central to corporate risk strategies.<\/p>\n
