European Union nations brought 33.8 gigawatts of new solar capacity online in the first six months of 2026, edging past the 33.2 GW recorded in the same period a year earlier, according to SolarPower Europe. The result keeps the bloc on a trajectory toward roughly 68.1 GW for the full year \u2014 though that figure would fall short of last year’s record 69.6 GW.<\/p>\n
The geography of growth is uneven. Germany and Spain continue to lead in absolute volumes, while Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania and France posted modest gains. By contrast, the Netherlands, Hungary, Belgium and the Czech Republic are trailing their 2025 pace. In terms of project type, utility-scale ground-mounted plants account for about 56 percent of new additions, with rooftop systems making up the remaining 44 percent; within that segment, residential installations are softening while commercial and industrial rooftop demand remains comparatively robust.<\/p>\n
High solar output delivered a tangible economic benefit: EU countries avoided approximately \u20ac30 billion in gas import costs during the half-year, and in June solar covered a record quarter of continent-wide electricity demand.<\/p>\n
Yet the same rapid growth is exposing structural weaknesses. SolarPower Europe highlights rising curtailment, declining capture prices and recurring episodes of negative wholesale prices as daytime generation outpaces what grids can absorb. Evening peak prices are climbing as storage capacity and demand flexibility lag behind solar expansion. Policy uncertainty and reduced government support in several member states add further headwinds. Without faster deployment of battery storage and accelerated grid upgrades, analysts warn that daytime curtailment will intensify and evening price spikes will become a more frequent feature of European power markets.<\/p>\n
