Global electric vehicle sales grew by just 2 percent in August 2026, reaching 1.83 million units \u2014 a modest headline that conceals sharply diverging regional trajectories, according to data from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence cited by Electrek.<\/p>\n
Europe was the standout performer. Around 380,000 electric cars changed hands in August, a 36 percent gain year on year. The region’s cumulative tally through August reached 3.3 million units, up 29 percent, with France, Germany and the United Kingdom together accounting for more than half. Sustained government incentives, elevated fuel prices and an expanding range of affordable models all contributed. France set a new record, with EVs capturing 41 percent of its passenger-car market. Spain reinforced the regional trend by launching a \u20ac400 million subsidy programme offering buyers up to \u20ac4,500 toward a new low-emission vehicle.<\/p>\n
North America moved sharply the other way. August deliveries fell to roughly 140,000 units \u2014 down 33 percent \u2014 and the cumulative eight-month total stood at 1 million, a 21 percent shortfall against 2025 levels. The loss of federal tax credits drained consumer demand, while automakers cut new model launches and foreign-brand availability remained constrained.<\/p>\n
China’s picture was mixed. Benchmark put August volume at 1.03 million units, off 11 percent, broadly in line with retail new-energy-vehicle data showing a 10.1 percent drop. Pure battery-electric retail sales, however, edged up 0.8 percent. A 40 percent collapse in conventional-car demand pushed EVs to 65.2 percent of China’s total passenger market. Exports were a clear bright spot: Chinese manufacturers shipped more than 500,000 units abroad in August, a gain of over 150 percent year on year.<\/p>\n
With January-through-August global volume at 13.4 million units \u2014 only 4 percent above year-ago levels \u2014 the widening gap between incentive-supported European growth and incentive-stripped North American contraction looks set to define the market’s final quarter.<\/p>\n
