Energy firm Moeve and steelmaking giant ArcelorMittal have agreed to establish an equal-ownership joint platform dedicated to developing and commercialising green-molecule energy solutions, including renewable hydrogen, biomethane and biofuels, as substitutes for fossil fuels in steel production.<\/p>\n
Operating under the Green Molecules to Green Steel alliance, the venture will be anchored by a shared innovation hub that brings together the research capabilities of both companies. Work will span three technical tracks: carbon capture and utilisation technologies, biotech-driven process optimisation, and AI-assisted development of advanced materials.<\/p>\n
The partnership takes shape against a difficult financing backdrop. Roughly half of planned green-steel projects have been deferred, and public funding committed by governments so far \u2014 around $20 billion \u2014 represents a fraction of the estimated $1.5 trillion the sector needs to fully decarbonise. The platform will draw on a mix of private capital from both founders and public funding streams, and remains open to additional investors. Spain’s Asturian regional agency Sekuens is set to participate.<\/p>\n
Both partners bring complementary groundwork. Moeve is already building out the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley under its Positive Motion programme, while ArcelorMittal is investing in two Spanish plants being retooled for lower-emission steel output.<\/p>\n
Analysts note that how quickly the platform can scale will hinge on two external variables: the willingness of industrial buyers to pay for greener steel, and the pace of government support mechanisms across Europe.<\/p>\n
