Greece’s electricity transmission operator IPTO has unveiled a ten-year development programme covering 2027 to 2036 that lifts its capital commitment to \u20ac9 billion \u2014 a \u20ac2 billion increase over the equivalent plan from the previous year. Roughly 80 percent of that spending is targeted for deployment before 2030.<\/p>\n
The central goal is connecting more than 10 GW of additional renewable generation while keeping the system stable as consumption rises. IPTO projects total electricity demand will reach 64 GW by 2036 \u2014 a more conservative figure than the 74 GW foreseen in Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan. Data centres, industrial users, and the broader electrification of the economy are identified as the primary demand drivers.<\/p>\n
Cross-border links feature heavily in the plan. The Great Sea Interconnector to Cyprus is among the flagship undertakings. Separate lines to Turkey and Albania are scheduled for commissioning by 2031, while the connection to Italy has been pushed back to 2033. On the domestic network, IPTO will construct a new extra-high-voltage hub in Alexandroupolis and carry out major works at five large transmission substations.<\/p>\n
Renewable deployment is already outpacing official forecasts. About 10 GW of solar and wind is currently operating on the transmission network, with another 8.7 GW on the distribution grid. Greece’s solar sector alone surpassed its 13.5 GW target for 2030 during this summer. IPTO considers the 14 GW of capacity that has already received grid-connection approvals sufficient to cover the required growth.<\/p>\n
To maintain voltage stability at high renewable penetration levels, specialised reactive-power equipment will be fitted at 150 kV substations. Storage expansion is also planned after the government raised the national accumulation target to between 5 and 7 GW by 2030.<\/p>\n
