Security concerns over critical energy infrastructure are beginning to harden into regulatory action across Europe, with Chinese solar inverters increasingly under scrutiny. Pascal de Boer, General Manager of SolarEdge Europe \u2014 whose company stands to gain from tighter restrictions \u2014 says governments are drawing on a logic similar to what drove early 5G technology policy.<\/p>\n
The European Commission has already moved to bar equipment from high-risk countries from receiving direct EU funding. De Boer argues the trend will intensify as large-scale data centres and artificial intelligence facilities demand reliable, protected power systems \u2014 raising the stakes for who controls hardware wired into the continent’s electricity grid.<\/p>\n
Speaking candidly as a market participant with a direct financial interest, de Boer drew a pointed distinction: “If someone asks me to turn off inverters in Europe, I can simply refuse.” A Chinese manufacturer, he noted, would face legal jeopardy for ignoring instructions from its own government \u2014 an asymmetry he views as increasingly decisive for procurement decisions ahead.<\/p>\n
SolarEdge is already positioning itself to capitalise on any regulatory shift, expanding its manufacturing footprint in the United States. Whether European policy ultimately tightens along the lines of 5G restrictions remains to be seen, but the security argument is now openly shaping conversations at both industry and institutional level.<\/p>\n
