Ukrainian energy company DTEK has secured an \u20ac85 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to build battery energy storage systems (BESS) that will help stabilise the country’s war-strained power grid.<\/p>\n
The funds will finance storage capacity designed to absorb electricity during off-peak periods and release it when demand surges, boosting grid flexibility at a time when Ukraine’s energy infrastructure faces persistent threats. The project is expected to be a meaningful step toward stronger infrastructure resilience and greater energy autonomy.<\/p>\n
EBRD’s decision hinged on DTEK’s track record as a reliable borrower. Yaryna Skorokhod, a DTEK representative for strategic communications and government relations, addressed the agreement at the Total PR Marathon 2026. She noted that international financial institutions look beyond raw financial indicators \u2014 they assess a borrower’s capacity to honour commitments, maintain uninterrupted operations, and sustain constructive interaction with government bodies, diplomatic missions, and other stakeholders. The company attributes its standing to concrete results: regular reporting and the rebuilding of damaged power stations.<\/p>\n
The transaction carries weight beyond its headline figure. Attracting large-scale targeted financing from a major multilateral lender while a war continues signals that creditors are prepared to back Ukraine’s energy sector. Company officials say the deal opens the door for additional international investment in the country’s long-term energy independence.<\/p>\n
