Volvo has claimed its eighth International Truck of the Year title, but with a historic distinction: every model in the winning lineup runs on batteries, with no combustion engine among them. The 2027 award was presented at IAA Transportation in Hanover and went to the entire electric range \u2014 the FH, FM, FMX, and the newly unveiled FH Aero Electric.<\/p>\n
The FH Aero Electric features redesigned electric axles that accommodate greater battery capacity within unchanged exterior dimensions, giving it a claimed single-charge range of up to 700 km. The other refreshed models in the family are rated for up to 470 km, while a separate 80-tonne configuration due in early 2027 is projected at up to 450 km. Serial production of the new generation began on 14 September in Gothenburg, with additional output planned in Ghent.<\/p>\n
Jury chair Florian Engel described the lineup as showing “how heavy battery transport is confidently moving from niche applications to a comprehensive transport solution.” A key enabler is megawatt charging, which Volvo says allows trucks to replenish energy quickly during mandatory driver rest stops \u2014 making long-haul, high-payload operation viable for battery-electric tractor units.<\/p>\n
Volvo has put roughly 7,000 electric trucks on the road, which together have covered more than 500 million kilometres. The top industry award going to an all-electric lineup for the first time is seen as a clear marker that battery trucks are becoming a genuine alternative to diesel for European carriers placing mainstream fleet orders.<\/p>\n
