Leipzig’s experience with hydrogen-powered refuse trucks has exposed a persistent gap between technological promise and the realities of daily municipal operations. Two years ago, the German city purchased 16 FAUN BluePower hydrogen vehicles, which came to form roughly one third of its collection fleet.<\/p>\n
Over that period, the trucks averaged just 45.6 percent availability. Conventional refuse trucks, by comparison, reach around 80 percent. Technical faults, scheduled maintenance, and repairs repeatedly kept the hydrogen vehicles off the road, forcing the city to deploy backup equipment to cover their routes.<\/p>\n
Leipzig’s case carries weight precisely because it goes beyond a single pilot unit. The city runs a complete fleet with dedicated refueling infrastructure \u2014 yet even at that scale, reliability has fallen well short of what uninterrupted waste collection demands.<\/p>\n
Several interconnected factors complicate any path to wider rollout: fuel costs including delivery to the depot, the number of reserve vehicles required to maintain service continuity, spare-parts availability, supplier durability in the market, and cities’ willingness to place repeat orders.<\/p>\n
Other municipalities are working around the same constraints. Freiburg, for instance, operates a larger hydrogen refuse fleet and has commissioned a second fueling station to build in redundancy.<\/p>\n
The Leipzig results suggest that hydrogen refuse trucks remain technically feasible but have not yet demonstrated commercial competitiveness \u2014 a distinction with real weight for cities weighing long-term procurement decisions.<\/p>\n
