A geothermal technology previously associated with pilots and sites with natural hot springs is moving into the commercial mainstream. Fervo Energy has begun delivering grid power from Cape Station, its utility-scale enhanced geothermal plant in Utah, with full commercial operations formally scheduled to launch Thursday.<\/p>\n
The milestone represents a meaningful scale-up from proof of concept: Fervo’s earlier Project Red pilot in Nevada demonstrated the approach at 3.5 MW, while the Utah plant’s first power block operates at 33 MW. Cape Station works by creating underground reservoirs in hot dry rock formations using oil-and-gas drilling methods, enabling energy extraction in locations where it was previously impossible.<\/p>\n
Shell Energy, a retail power provider, will receive carbon-free output from the plant. Fervo has also secured a new agreement with Google covering 400 MW of future capacity. The total project carries a price tag of roughly two billion dollars, with phased expansion targeting 500 MW by 2028.<\/p>\n
A commercially attractive trait of engineered geothermal is its operating flexibility: these plants can run continuously in baseload mode or modulate output to complement solar generation on the grid \u2014 a combination that could secure a distinct position in clean energy markets.<\/p>\n
The broader challenge remains the exceptionally high upfront drilling costs.
