AuroraCell Launches Sodium-Ion Home Battery Rated for 20,000 Cycles
Bulgarian manufacturer AuroraCell has introduced a residential energy storage system built on sodium-ion chemistry with a chromium oxide (NCO) cathode — a variant the company says delivers durability and cold-weather performance that standard sodium-ion cells typically struggle to match.
The AuroraCell 9.7 kWh 48V RESS Pack is designed for 48V DC hybrid inverters and carries a nominal energy capacity of 9.744 kWh with a 210 Ah rating. The unit operates across a voltage range of 32–54 V, weighs 110.5 kg, and holds an IP65 protection rating.
AuroraCell rates the NCO cells for 20,000 full charge-discharge cycles at 100% depth of discharge and 25°C, and the system can discharge at temperatures from −40°C to +60°C. The company says the NCO cathode — where sodium still carries the charge but the electrode material differs from conventional designs — compensates for typical sodium-ion limitations such as lower energy density and reduced performance at temperature extremes, offering longer cycle life and greater thermal stability instead.
On safety, AuroraCell states the NCO architecture prevents fire and explosion risks, though no additional technical details are provided in the documentation. The system holds UL9540A, UN38.3, and CE certifications and is compatible with hybrid inverters from Victron Energy, Deye, Solis, Growatt, and SMA. Multiple units can be linked in parallel to scale capacity. The manufacturer backs the system with a 20-year warranty.
