Ukraine’s Solar Capacity Nears 10 GW as Battery Storage Accelerates

Ukraine’s installed solar generation has reached between 9.4 and 9.7 GW, with roughly 2 GW of additional capacity forecast to come online by the end of 2026, according to the Ukrainian Solar Energy Association (ASEU).

The solar build-out has been accompanied by sharp growth in battery storage. Developers added 2.9 GWh of energy storage capacity across 2025, followed by a further 1.6 to 1.9 GWh in the first half of 2026 alone. Analysts expect full-year 2026 additions to reach 3.2 GWh — a scale that significantly expands the technical capacity for balancing distributed generation on the grid.

Most new installations are modest in size: 80 percent of projects have a capacity at or below 1 MW and are oriented toward on-site consumption by businesses and households.

Whether the 2 GW forecast is realised will depend on a set of conditions that ASEU board chair Vladyslav Sokolovsky characterises as equally important. These include access to bank lending, comprehensive war-risk insurance, simplified technical and administrative procedures for connecting to distribution networks, reliable physical protection of energy infrastructure, and deeper integration of the Ukrainian electricity market with ENTSO-E.
