German Utility Automates Rooftop Solar Grid Approvals, Cutting Weeks to Minutes for Thousands

German distribution network operator Netze BW has put into commercial operation an automated grid-connection service for residential solar installations, cutting what previously required nearly two weeks of manual engineering review down to an instant digital decision for a significant share of applicants.

Of more than 16,000 online applications received, over 5,000 households gained a legally binding connection approval within five minutes of submitting their request. For context, Germany’s median grid-approval wait stands at 80 days, making even partial automation a meaningful step forward.

The system handles installations up to 15 kilowatts through a round-the-clock customer portal. Once an owner enters technical parameters, a spatial grid model automatically checks line topology, transformer loads, and previously approved connections, then issues a binding offer with exact grid-entry coordinates — without any engineering staff involvement. Applications that exceed 15 kW, or fall in areas where network capacity is tight, continue through manual review, which can take up to 12 days.

Chief Executive Jörg Reichert said digital tools are enabling connections without paperwork or lengthy phone queues, though he acknowledged the energy transition cannot be reduced to a single click. The service went into full operation in late July, and Netze BW says it intends to broaden automation to other grid-connection processes going forward.
