Germany Sends Solar Equipment and Storage to Six Lviv Coal Communities Under Two Programmes
Six communities in Lviv Oblast have received solar power equipment and battery storage units under two separate German assistance programmes, bolstering critical infrastructure and vocational training across the coal-transition region.
The winter aid package, delivered by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ Ukraine, provided 20 battery storage units of 61.44 kWh each, plus components for seven solar installations of 38.4 kW apiece, each paired with its own 61.44 kWh battery. That package is valued at approximately 15.4 million hryvnias and went to Sheptytska, Velykomostivska, Sokalska, Radekhivska, Belzka and Dobrotvivska communities — all identified under Germany’s just transition support for former coal areas.
A parallel project commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWE) and also implemented by GIZ targeted green energy recovery with dedicated solar equipment. Sheptytska community received installations totalling 290 kW across two water intake sites. Belzka community gained three stations totalling 120 kW, supplying a municipal utility company, an Administrative Services Centre and a local hospital. Sokalska community received 100 kW split between a water treatment facility and a city water intake.

Part of the equipment was transferred to Sheptytsky Professional College of Energy and Technologies to build a renewable energy training centre. The facility now features wind turbines, test benches and hybrid systems alongside solar units of 3 kW and 15 kW delivered earlier, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with modern energy technologies.
