The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone is finally becoming a platform for the development of green energy – on 12 April, the first solar power plant was launched there.

It was opened by Svitlana Hrynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ricardo Lopez-Aranda Jagu, Ambassador of Spain to Ukraine, and Oleksandr Lytvynenko, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine.

According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, discussions on the project began in 2019, but the process was delayed due to the war. The implementation was successful due to the support of Spain.

The capacity of the first solar power plant in the Chornobyl zone is 763 kW. 2,244 photovoltaic modules are installed on an area of 13,000 square metres and have already been connected to the grid.

The construction cost was about UAH 30 million. In the summer, the company plans to open a second SPP in the Exclusion Zone, which will be twice as powerful as the first one.
