Two Towers, One Future: China Nears Completion of a Unique Solar Thermal Power Plant

In Gansu Province, China, construction of the world’s first solar thermal power plant with two towers and a single blockis nearing completion.

📌 Key Facts:

  • Location: Guazhou City, Gansu Province.

  • Structure: Two 200-meter thermal towers and nearly 30,000 heliostat mirrors with up to 94% reflectivity.

  • Technology: A molten salt system (up to 600 °C) that enables energy storage and 24/7 continuous generation.

  • Capacity: 1.8 billion kWh per year — enough to power ~170,000 households.

  • Ecology: Annual CO₂ emissions reduction of 1.53 million tons.

  • Innovation: Dual-tower configuration improves efficiency by 24% compared to classic CSP systems.

🔄 Current Status (August 2025):

  • In February 2025, transformers and transmission lines were connected to the grid.

  • In April, the first comprehensive test of the steam turbine block (“conventional island”) was successfully conducted.

  • The plant is now in the final stage of commissioning tests and preparing for full operation in the coming months.

🌍 This project will become a central part of the clean energy base in northwest China, which also includes photovoltaic and wind power plants with a combined capacity of 700 MW.

Experts note that CSP (concentrated solar power) can play a key role in the global energy transition, as it enables effective energy storage and helps balance power systems.

👉 Once again, China demonstrates that large-scale innovative projects in renewable energy can reshape the global energy landscape and bring closer a future without fossil fuels.
