The Bioenergy Association of Ukraine has prepared a review of the report for the SAF platform from IEA Bioenergy, “Identification and Assessment of Sustainability Effects Associated with Biogas Solutions”, which explores the multifaceted role of biogas in advancing a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.

On September 11, 2025, IEA Bioenergy presented its report “Identification and Assessment of Sustainability Effects Associated with Biogas Solutions”. The document highlights the diverse role of biogas in the transition to a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.

Biogas, produced through anaerobic digestion of organic waste, provides reliable renewable energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and simultaneously addresses waste management challenges. Additional benefits include nutrient recycling, improved sanitation, and enhanced soil fertility through the use of digestate.

The report identifies five key areas of impact:

  • Waste and wastewater: improved sanitation, odor control, water quality.

  • Agriculture: income diversification, reduced demand for synthetic fertilizers.

  • Biofertilizers: closing nutrient cycles, protecting soils and water.

  • Energy: production of biomethane and biogenic CO₂, strengthening energy independence.

  • Society: climate change mitigation and the development of a resilient circular economy.

International experience from Canada, France, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland shows that success depends on state policy — standardization, financial support, and infrastructure development. Policy risks and barriers directly affect the competitiveness of biogas solutions.

IEA Bioenergy recommends broader recognition of the cross-sectoral benefits of biogas, integrated strategies, and the removal of regulatory barriers. Only under a coherent policy can biogas become not just a tool for decarbonization but also a cornerstone of green recovery and energy security.
