Ukrainian Biomethane for European Buyers: Key Takeaways from the Joint agriportance – UABIO Webinar
On January 15, a joint webinar was held by the German company agriportance GmbH, a member of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO), together with UABIO. The event focused on how Ukrainian producers can secure a meaningful position in the European biomethane market — from production potential to practical aspects of trade and certification.
The webinar brought together representatives of the bioenergy sector, market experts, and potential partners interested in the development of biomethane as part of Europe’s energy transition.
Current Status and Prospects of Biomethane Production in Ukraine
The keynote presentation, “Development and Prospects of Biomethane Production in Ukraine”, was delivered by Georgii Geletukha, Chairman of the Board of UABIO.
According to UABIO data, Ukraine currently operates five biomethane plants with a total installed capacity of 52 million cubic meters of biomethane per year.
“In 2025, the combined output of all five plants exceeded 11 million cubic meters of pipeline-quality biomethane, as well as approximately 5,900 tonnes of Bio-LNG,” noted Georgii Geletukha.
Further expansion of the sector is already planned:
-
2026 — commissioning of two new biomethane plants with a combined capacity of 59 million m³ per year;
-
2027–2028 — launch of six additional plants with a total capacity exceeding 36.8 million m³ per year.
These figures demonstrate the rapid formation of a biomethane industry in Ukraine that is increasingly oriented toward export markets, particularly the European Union.
European Market Requirements and Trading Opportunities
The second key presentation, “Market Development and Trading Perspectives”, was delivered by Henning Dix, Managing Director and Head of Business Development at agriportance GmbH.
He explained the fundamentals of the European biomethane market and highlighted the importance of certification mechanisms. In particular, he outlined the difference between:
-
Guarantees of Origin (GO) — certificates confirming that a specific amount of energy was produced from renewable sources;
-
Proofs of Sustainability (PoS) — verification that biomethane complies with EU sustainability criteria, including greenhouse gas emission reductions and sustainable feedstock use throughout the entire value chain.
Compliance with these instruments is a prerequisite for accessing the EU market under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and for participating in both regulated and voluntary biomethane markets.
Why Biomethane Matters for Ukraine and the EU
During the webinar, speakers emphasized that biomethane is not only a renewable gas, but also a strategic tool for:
-
decarbonizing industry and transport, including heavy-duty and maritime sectors;
-
reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil natural gas;
-
converting agricultural residues into energy and organic fertilizers.
With its strong agricultural base, Ukraine has significant potential to become a reliable supplier of renewable gas to the EU, supporting Europe’s decarbonization goals while creating new export opportunities for Ukrainian producers.
Conclusion
The joint agriportance–UABIO webinar demonstrated that Ukrainian biomethane is transitioning from pilot projects to an emerging export-oriented industry. Continued growth will depend on further capacity expansion, alignment with EU sustainability and certification requirements, and integration into European trading mechanisms.
For Ukrainian producers, biomethane represents not only a contribution to climate goals, but also a concrete opportunity to strengthen energy cooperation with the European Union and to position Ukraine as an important player in the renewable gas market.
