Four banks put €234 million behind a Sicilian agrivoltaics project

€234.1 million, four major lenders and one Sicilian site: European Energy says its Vizzini project shows agrivoltaics can move from development into large-scale construction and financing.

The company reached financial close on the 225 MW plant with financing secured for borrower Sun Project s.r.l. The money came from NORD/LB, Societe Generale, Crédit Agricole CIB and the IMI CIB arm of Intesa Sanpaolo. Construction has already started, with commercial operation planned for 2028.

Once running, the station will generate about 405 GWh a year, roughly the demand of more than 135,000 households. It holds a 20-year contract for difference under Italy’s FerX support scheme.

Vizzini is designed to pair industrial-scale renewable output with continued farming on the same land, making room for sheep grazing, reforestation work and biodiversity measures. According to European Energy’s regional manager for Italy, Filippo Ricci, it was the combination of contracted revenue, secured grid connection and a solid technical and agricultural design that produced a structure lenders were willing to back.
