Cybersecurity Reshapes Europe’s Solar Inverter Market as Regulators Eye Chinese Hardware

Security concerns are emerging as a decisive factor in Europe’s solar inverter procurement, potentially rivalling price as the primary selection criterion. Pascal de Buer, SolarEdge’s general manager for Europe, describes the dynamic as analogous to the earlier 5G debate: firms legally bound to comply with shutdown directives from high-risk governments cannot simply refuse, and that vulnerability is precisely what regulators are focused on.

The European Commission has moved to exclude projects using Chinese inverters from funding it directly controls. Underpinning this shift are two legislative pillars — the NIS2 Directive and the Cyber Resilience Act — which impose stringent digital-security obligations on critical energy infrastructure, requiring it to be resilient against unauthorised external interference.

Demand signals are also being shaped by the rapid build-out of AI computing capacity. Combined infrastructure from the five largest US hyperscalers is projected to approach 100 GW by 2028, a scale that places grid-connected power hardware under heightened scrutiny.

SolarEdge is positioning itself to capture the resulting market shift by manufacturing outside high-risk supply chains and offering auditable software. The company argues that higher upfront hardware costs can be offset in practice: its module-level energy management tools enable owners to arbitrage electricity tariffs and export surplus power, with potential savings or revenues reaching €1,000 per year. The newly launched Nexis platform is designed to reduce overall system costs without compromising efficiency or security standards.

“The most interesting driver of change is cybersecurity itself, as governments grow increasingly concerned about critical infrastructure being controlled by those who might compromise it,” de Buer said.
