Record UK Heatwave Summer Propels Solar Output to Historic High

Britain’s solar sector delivered its strongest summer on record in 2026, with generation climbing 23% year-on-year as an extraordinary streak of hot, sun-filled weeks reshaped the country’s electricity mix.

According to Carbon Brief, solar farms and rooftop installations combined produced twice the electricity over the summer months that they had in the same period in 2021. The surge unfolded against the backdrop of the hottest summer ever recorded in the country, punctuated by five heat waves between May and August.

July emerged as the single most productive month in the history of UK solar, with output reaching 3.3 TWh — covering 15% of national electricity demand. Total solar generation from January through the end of August stood at 17 TWh.

Analysts note that while high temperatures can shave a fraction off panel efficiency, substantially longer daylight hours and stronger insolation more than compensated. Capacity expansion has played an equally important role: installed solar capacity has grown from 21 GW at the opening of Q3 2025 to close to 24 GW today.

Private households have been a key engine of that growth. Rooftop systems now account for around 29% of total capacity, and more than 19,800 new domestic installations were commissioned in July 2026 alone. Energy consultancy Utility Bidder estimates that homeowners with rooftop solar saved approximately £86.7 million across the 26 heat-wave days.

Chris Hewett, chief executive of Solar Energy UK, said the technology had kept overall power prices meaningfully lower than they would otherwise have been had gas plants been called upon to meet daytime demand instead.
