Global Battery Storage Hits 177 GWh Year-to-Date as Europe Triples Deployments and Saudi Arabia Surges

The world added 20.9 GWh (6,516 MW) of battery storage in August, bringing the year-to-date total to 177 GWh — a 35 percent increase over the same stretch last year, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence data.

China accounted for 12,757 MWh of August’s figure, cementing its absolute dominance of the global market. The month’s largest individual projects were two Inner Mongolia installations at 2 GWh each.

Europe’s performance over the first eight months stood out: the continent connected 18.2 GWh — triple its year-ago pace. August alone brought 2.29 GWh, with two projects accounting for most of that. EDF commissioned a 600 MWh system in Belgium, while investment group CIP brought a 1 GWh facility online in Scotland. Together the two sites contributed 1.6 GWh of Europe’s monthly total.

Saudi Arabia delivered the sharpest regional surprise of the month, adding 4 GWh through two projects — Tabuk and Ha’il — each rated at 2 GWh and equipped by Chinese manufacturer Hithium. That gave the kingdom a 19 percent share of August global capacity additions, outpacing all of North America combined.

North America, by contrast, recorded its weakest month of the year, with roughly 400 MWh connected — largely from EDP’s Sandrini project in California, a 5 percent share of the global August total.
