Amine Biogas Upgrading Technology: New Opportunities for Ukraine’s Energy Independence
15.09.2025Another UABIO Fridays session featured an expert discussion on “Amine Biogas Upgrading Systems: A Traditional Approach to Biomethane Production in Northern Europe.”
The speaker, Olexandra Gumeniuk, Commercial Manager for Eastern Europe at Ammongas (European Energy Group), shared insights on how this technology is applied in Scandinavia and the United States — and what it could mean for Ukraine.
Why does it matter?
Ukraine is actively seeking new solutions for energy security and decarbonization. Biomethane is one of the key pathways to provide a stable source of green energy and ensure integration with the European energy market. Amine technology offers unique opportunities here.
Key advantages of the technology:
-
Near-zero methane losses: Biogas upgrading delivers biomethane with over 99% purity.
-
High energy efficiency: Lower electricity use compared to membrane technologies; up to 90% of heat is recovered within the system.
-
Flexibility: Works equally well for grid injection or BioLNG production.
-
Long-term economics: Lower operating costs make investments more profitable, especially for large-scale projects.
Gumeniuk also emphasized that the European Commission is offering technical support and partial risk coverage for biomethane projects in Ukraine, which further increases investment attractiveness and opens the door for large-scale market growth.
At a time when war is destroying traditional generation assets, biomethane is emerging as a strategic resource. Combining local feedstocks, advanced technologies, and EU support can lay the foundation for both energy independence and a green recovery.
