Biomethane in Ukraine — Conference Highlights
12.06.2025On June 12, Kyiv hosted the conference “Biomethane in Ukraine: Opportunities and Development”, organised by our partners and coalition members of Global 100% RE Ukraine — the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO), in cooperation with the Energy Community and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Held at the Hilton Hotel, the event brought together representatives of public authorities, international organisations, the private sector, and leading industry experts. Participants discussed political and regulatory frameworks, technical solutions, current challenges, and the next steps for developing the biomethane sector in Ukraine.
Key discussion topics included:
- regulatory support for biomethane production;
- availability of feedstock and sustainable supply chains;
- practical experience in biomethane production and export;
- grid connection and storage infrastructure;
- certification and carbon intensity assessment;
- potential use of biomethane in the transport sector;
- innovative feedstock sources: cover crops, lignocellulosic biomass, microalgae.
Opening remarks were delivered by:
Karolina Cegir, Energy Community Secretariat
Anna Sandor, UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
Mykola Kolisnyk, Ministry of Energy of Ukraine
Olena Lenska, Head of the Renewable Energy Department, State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine
Session 1: First Experience with Biomethane in Ukraine
Speakers shared insights into existing biomethane production and export cases, as well as the prospects of synthetic renewable methane from CO₂ and H₂. The session featured:
