Ternopil region is actively working on energy independence. The local regional council has announced plans to significantly increase renewable energy capacity. This includes wind farms, small solar power plants, and cogeneration.

“We plan to commission additional wind power generation capacity. We are talking about five wind farms with a capacity of 3 to 5 megawatts. We plan to install a number of solar power plants at four water utilities and six healthcare facilities. We are developing technical solutions for the installation of energy storage systems with a capacity of about 12 megawatts. In addition, we are working on the installation of solar power plants at primary health care centers as part of the project “Strengthening the health care system and saving lives,” said Stepan Kuibida, First Deputy Head of the Regional State Administration.

Nine cogeneration units with a total capacity of 7 megawatts have already been installed in the region: seven at municipal facilities (five of which were received as international technical assistance), and two more at industrial facilities.

The commissioning of a biogas plant using livestock and agricultural waste is also nearing completion. Four more agricultural enterprises are planning to implement projects to build gas piston plants.

Currently, the total capacity of renewable energy sources in Ternopil is up to 230 megawatts:

  • 17 mini-hydroelectric power plants
  • more than 4,300 small solar power plants;
  • 45 industrial SPPs;
  • 2 wind power plants;
  • 2 biogas power plants
