Former Google startup will spend $40 million to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

Former Google startup 280 Earth, a startup created by Alphabet, has signed a $40 million deal to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at a new facility in Oregon.

This was reported by Ekonomichna Pravda with reference to Bloomberg.

The system, developed by 280 Earth, can use waste heat from the data center to increase its efficiency while reducing the cost of cooling the center. Carbon dioxide is continuously extracted from the air using a sorbent, unlike competing technologies that remove carbon dioxide in batches.

The deals, facilitated by the Frontier coalition, are expected to remove 61,600 tons of greenhouse gases from 2024 to 2030.

Frontier is a joint project of Alphabet, Meta Platforms Inc., Shopify Inc. and Stripe Inc. that aims to fund carbon removal technologies, including direct capture of carbon dioxide from the air.
