Innovative Biological Hydrogen Methanation Technology at a Biogas Complex — a winning project of the 100 gREen AWARD-2025

The project “Industrial Testing of an Innovative Biological Hydrogen Methanation Technology at the Existing Biogas Complex of Ukrainian Dairy Company LLC” is among the best green transformation projects of 2025 in the field of bioenergy.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The technology is being implemented within the framework of the BIOMETHAVERSE project, which is part of the EU’s key research and innovation programme Horizon Europe.

Its main goal is to expand the range of biomethane production technologies in Europe, make this process more cost-effective, and support the deployment of innovative biomethane production pathways.

MHP ECO ENERGY, with the support of UABIO and German partners — Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) and Ellmann Engineering — developed a pilot biological methanation unit.

At the beginning of 2025, this unit was transferred to Ukrainian Dairy Company LLC for industrial testing.

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY

The technology is based on combining CO₂ contained in biogas with renewable hydrogen to increase biomethane output.

Industrial testing of the pilot unit by the staff of the biogas complex of Ukrainian Dairy Company LLC demonstrated the high efficiency of this innovative technology and confirmed the results of laboratory research.

The developed technology corresponds to TRL 6–7, which means it is ready for large-scale demonstration.

The selection was carried out by the Board of Global 100% RE Ukraine — representatives of профильних associations of green energy, including the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine. In each category, the best implemented projects were identified, and the award will be presented to all the teams behind their implementation. 100 gREen AWARD-2025 is a recognition of those who are truly changing Ukraine’s energy sector.
