News

The Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) has released a comprehensive analytical brief prepared by leading national experts: Georgii Geletukha, Yurii Matvieiev, Petro Kucheruk, Semen Dragnev, and Volodymyr Kramar.

This brief was developed within the framework of the project “Development of the Biomethane Sector in Ukraine,” financed by the Energy Community with the support of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Key topics covered:

  • Overview of the current status and prospects for using agricultural residues for biomethane production
  • Types and characteristics of available crop residues in Ukraine
  • Technologies for collection, transportation, and storage
  • Agronomic, environmental, and energy-related considerations
  • Techno-economic feasibility of biomethane production from straw and other residues
  • Case studies and existing project analysis
  • Estimation of Ukraine’s biomethane production potential from agricultural residues

Ukraine has a significant untapped potential to produce biomethane from lignocellulosic agricultural residues such as wheat straw, corn stalks, and sunflower stems. The estimated potential reaches 5.2 billion Nm³ of CH₄ annually, opening the door to strengthened energy security and a more sustainable, decarbonized future.
