Ukraine’s EV Market Shrinks as Europe Surges

Ukraine registered roughly 4,600 battery-electric vehicles in September 2026, cutting last year’s figure nearly in half, according to the Ukravtoprom industry association. The contrast with European trends is stark: European electric-car sales rose nearly 72.9 percent over the same period.

The passenger segment accounted for 4,349 of September’s registrations, yet the split between new and used reveals how the market is structured. Only 448 new passenger EVs found buyers — an 80 percent fall year-on-year — while 3,901 used imports were cleared through customs, itself a 42 percent decline. Commercial battery vehicles followed the same pattern: 222 units registered, with just 10 of them new, compared with 46 new units a year earlier.

Through the first nine months of 2026, Ukrainian drivers took ownership of 27,954 electric vehicles in total. Lviv Oblast led all regions with 4,269 registrations, 94 percent of them used cars. Kyiv recorded 2,689 units with a 61 percent used share, while Kyiv Oblast added 2,173.

Among new models, the Chinese BYD Sea Lion 06 EV topped the list with 109 registrations, followed by the Volkswagen ID.Unyx at 35 and the Zeekr 7X at 33. The used-import ranking was dominated by Tesla: Model Y led with 512 registrations, ahead of the Nissan Leaf (484) and Tesla Model 3 (468).
