Kryvyi Rih Eyes 12 MW Solar Plant for Wastewater Treatment — but Plans Remain Unconfirmed
Kryvyi Rih has included a 12 MW solar power plant in a draft community development action plan, with the installation intended to supply electricity to the city’s wastewater treatment infrastructure. The proposed site is the Central Aeration Station of municipal utility Kryvbasvodokanal, where the plant would power pumps and aeration systems.
The draft action plan for 2026–2028 lists 2026–2027 as an indicative implementation period, with KP “Institute of Urban Development of Kryvyi Rih” named as the responsible body. The mayor formed a dedicated working group late last year to coordinate the effort. However, the project’s cost, funding sources, signed contracts, and actual construction start date remain unconfirmed. It is also unclear whether the solar plant provision survived into the final version of City Council Resolution No. 4191.
The scale of the proposed installation is significant. At 12 MW, it would be nearly seven times larger than the combined installed capacity of all 48 solar installations the city has already mounted on municipal facilities, which total roughly 1.8 MW. Those existing panels have generated savings of 6.05 million hryvnias since the start of the year. As one example, panels at a water supply station produced 794 kWh in August and covered 43.4% of that station’s pump consumption.
One practical question the plans leave open is battery storage. Without an energy storage system and a properly configured inverter, a solar plant of this type cannot keep the treatment facility running during power outages.
