Saudi Arabia Targets 50% Renewable Electricity by 2030
17.07.2025Long known as a symbol of the oil era, Saudi Arabia is now repositioning itself as a key player in the global energy transition. The country has officially committed to generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, under the national Saudi Green Initiative — a flagship component of its broader Vision 2030 strategy.
This is not just a political statement. It’s a state-level goal backed by investments, regulation, and execution. Over 130 GW of renewable energy capacity, primarily from solar and wind, is expected to come online in the next few years.
Where do things stand today?
As of early 2025:
- Over 6 GW of renewable energy is already grid-connected.
- Another 44 GW is under development.
- Large-scale facilities like Sudair Solar (1.5 GW) are already operational.
- A new wave of investment will deliver 15 GW more by 2028.
Who is financing the transition?
The Public Investment Fund (PIF) is leading the way — financing 70% of the national renewables program. In July 2025, PIF announced $8.3 billion in new investments for solar and wind projects.
Key partners include:
- ACWA Power, a private renewable energy operator.
- Aramco, the state oil giant now actively investing in clean energy.
- SAPCO and Badeel, local developers tasked with project implementation.
📑 All projects are based on long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), ensuring stable returns for investors and predictable pricing for the government — a bankable, scalable model.
This is more than energy infrastructure. It’s a coordinated transformation that integrates policy, finance, technology, and industrial development.
For Ukraine, this approach offers a concrete example of how to build energy independence through planning, financing mechanisms, and aligned execution — not slogans.
At Global 100% RE Ukraine, we believe Saudi Arabia’s story is not an exception — it’s a replicable model. Now is the time for Ukraine to shape its own version of a national Green Initiative, and we’re ready to contribute to that future.
