Air Products Secures Long-Term Supply Deal for Europe’s Largest Certified Green Hydrogen Plant

Industrial gas giant Air Products has agreed a long-term supply contract with Dutch chemicals company Nobian, securing offtake from what is currently Europe’s largest certified renewable hydrogen facility.

The Rotterdam plant, operated by Nobian, produces hydrogen through a chlor-alkali electrolysis process powered entirely by renewable electricity. In 2025 it became the first large-scale European facility to earn ISCC EU certification under the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) standard. With annual output exceeding 14,000 tonnes — equivalent to 1.68 petajoules — the site holds a significant lead over other certified RFNBO producers on the continent.

Under the agreement, Air Products will distribute the certified hydrogen through its existing supply network to industrial customers in the Netherlands, helping them meet obligations under the EU’s revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and advance their own decarbonisation targets.

The deal brings together two companies with complementary strengths: Nobian specialises in high-purity salt, low-carbon base chemicals, and underground energy storage caverns, while Air Products is the world’s largest hydrogen supplier by volume. Routing Nobian’s certified output through that established infrastructure lowers the barrier for end-users seeking compliant renewable hydrogen without building their own supply chains.

Rotterdam has been positioning itself as a continental hydrogen trading hub, and the arrangement adds another anchor tenant to that ambition, linking certified upstream production with a global distribution platform at one of Europe’s busiest ports.
