August Auto Slowdown Lifts European BEV Share to Record 30%

Europe’s battery-electric vehicle market hit a record in August, with fully electric cars accounting for 30% of new registrations as the wider automotive industry entered its customary summer lull — a period when slower overall volumes allow high-demand models to stand out. Around 250,000 new BEVs were registered across the continent, a 51% increase on the same month a year earlier.

The year-to-date BEV share reached 24% through August, already surpassing the full-year 2025 result of 20%, putting the segment on course for a stronger annual outcome.

Three names dominated the August sales rankings:

  • Tesla Model Y reclaimed the top spot, logging more than 10,000 registrations.
  • Skoda Elroq finished second, with sales up 45% year on year.
  • BMW iX1 and BMW iX3 both placed in the top five, consolidating the German brand’s market position.

The figures also capture the downstream effect of European tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024. Chinese manufacturers have pivoted heavily toward plug-in hybrids, pushing PHEV sales from that origin up 141% this year. European PHEV sales grew by just 3% over the same period, marking a shift in the segment’s competitive balance.
