August Battery Storage Commissions Reach 20.9 GWh as Europe’s Year-to-Date Total Triples

Global battery energy storage deployment reached 20.9 GWh of newly commissioned capacity in August, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. China held the dominant position, claiming 61 percent of the monthly total, while the remaining 39 percent was distributed across other markets — a sign of expanding geographic reach.

Europe stood out among non-Chinese regions. The continent added 2.29 GWh during the month, with 1.6 GWh attributed to two large-scale projects: a 600 MWh installation by EDF in Belgium and a 1 GWh project developed by investment group CIP in Scotland. Over the first eight months of the current year, European countries have collectively connected 18.2 GWh of storage capacity — three times the volume recorded in the same period a year earlier.

Saudi Arabia accounted for approximately 19 percent of the August global figure, underpinned by the commissioning of two major projects, Tabuk and Ha’il, each carrying a capacity of 2 GWh.

North America, meanwhile, recorded its weakest month of the year, adding only 400 MWh of new battery capacity in August.
