Battery Complex Backed by Karatzis and Metlen Goes Live in Thessaly
A 330 MW battery energy storage facility with a capacity of 790 MWh has entered commercial operation in Larissa, Thessaly. The project’s partners describe it as the largest standalone storage asset in Greece; Metlen additionally counts it among the biggest in the European Union.
The site was developed through a joint venture in which Karatzis Group, a Greek industrial conglomerate, holds a 51% share, and Metlen holds 49% and took responsibility for construction and technical operation. Chinese corporation Jinko ESS acted as the primary equipment supplier, integrating its SunTera G2 battery systems into the plant. The installation carries a direct-current rating of 395 MW, while its connection to an IPTO high-voltage substation limits grid-side output to 330 MW — a DC-to-AC ratio of 1.2.
At the inauguration, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece aims to have 3–4 GW of battery systems in operation or under development by 2028, to support reliable integration of renewable energy onto the national grid.
Metlen is also advancing storage projects in other markets. The company is developing the 129 MW Penn BESS project in the West Midlands, United Kingdom, which will provide 362 MWh of storage. It previously sold the 725 MWh Tamarico II storage project in Chile.
